( An introductory word from Mr. Beren: During my 2006 congressional
campaign against far left Democratic Party incumbent Jim McDermott, I issued
a position paper on border security and illegal immigration, available
to all online at http://www.berenforcongress.com/border.html
)
The American people have spoken, and have achieved a victory.
The
amnesty bill has failed, and never has it been more clear: the
American people want tough border security, enforcement of existing laws,
and removal of benefits and loopholes that create a magnet of attraction
for illegal immigration.
The national debate over border security and illegal immigration must
be
placed in the context of overall strategy in the U.S.-led war against
terrorism. We must first address the issue of border security. We can and
must reverse
the flow of illegal immigration.
Legal immigration is a wonderful and important feature of American history.
I
know this well, because I myself am the grandson of four legal European
immigrants. But illegal immigration poses a danger to America. It threatens
our national security, harms our economy, and weakens law enforcement.
And illegal immigration is unfair to legal immigrants who played by the
rules and became American citizens.
America welcomes the immigrant, but we ask people to be respectful
of our
country and abide by our laws. Illegal immigration is closely tied
to drug
smuggling, importation of gang activity, tax evasion, exploitation
of workers, and other types of crime. And in a world menaced by international
terrorism, allowing this to continue is a recipe for disaster.
