Tolkien Test II

Tolkien squared! Frodo lives, they say.  In the havens yet, one supposes.
But in whose care is the Red book of Westmarch?  Does Sam stand in
recitation posture, hands behind his back and dictate to one of Rosie's
great, great, great nephews, twice removed -- an academic hobbit of
quiet, well-mannered descendancy?  Or does the blood of old Bullroarer
yet silently flit from shadow to shadow in the decreasing woods of the world?
Where be there dragons in this day and age?  If the first test was too easy,
this one was designed by a wizard who is subtle and quick to anger.  Meddle
in his affairs at your peril!  Five correct answers would be pure magic!

The Tolkien Scholar
by Dennis Castle

"Chestnuts, chetsnuts" hissed Gollum.  I must say I answered all 20
(of the first Tolkien questions)  correctly, and only the "mathom"
question gave me pause.  Here, allow me to query thee:

1. Where did the Silmarils end up?
2. Who wore the three rings during the War of the Ring?
3. Who wore them originally?
4. What weapon was used by Turin Turambars best friend?
5. How many of the Fellowship of the Ring made it to the land of the Valar?
6. Which race was created first, elves, dwarves or men?
7. Who was the most beautiful female of legend?
8. Who was her husband?
9. What was the name of their dog?
10. Translate "Ash nazg durbatuluk".
11. Name the capital of Gondor before the War of the Ring.
12. Who was the only child of Fingolfin to return to the land of the Valar?
13. Name the first elf to meet mankind.
14. What was the original name of Morgoth?
15. Name the three fathers of the elves.
16. Name which one returned to Middle Earth and there remained.
17. Whom did he marry?
18. Name the dragon slain by Turin Turambar.
19. Name the human city on the Lonely Mountain.
20. Name the husband of Galadriel.

The answers are just below.

Answers to the impossible Tolkien questions of Mr. Castle!

From: "Dennis Castle"   castle@ethergate.com

Here are the answers, I suppose all of them are very hard.  If you got half
of them right, I'd say you had a mis-spent youth.  More than that and you
are either brilliant or have way too much time on your hands.

1) In the sky, in the sea and in the earth.
2) Gandalf, Elrond and Galadriel.
3) Cirdan, Elrond and Galadriel.
4) Beleg Cuthalion wielded a bow and, for a while, the dark sword Gurthang
that Turin accidentally killed him with.
5) Gandalf, Gimli, Legolas, Frodo and Samwise make five.
6) Aule made the dwarves first and Eru made them go back to sleep.
7) Luthien.
8) Beren One-Hand.
9) Huan.
10) One Ring to rule them all.
11) Osgiliath.
12) Galadriel.
13) Finarfin or Finrod or Felagund.
14) Melkor.
15) Ingwe, Finwe and Elwe.
16) Elwe returned and became King Thingol.
17) Melian.
18) Glaurung.
19) Dale.
20) Celeborn.

Fell in love with the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings when I was 13.  Only
wish I could have ran across them sooner.

Fare thee well wherever thou fairest, until thy eerie reaches thee at thy
journeys end,
Dennis
