May 31, 2002, KATU, all morning, the big Mt. Hood climbing and helicopter crash disaster.  We learned that three people fell in a 20 ft. deep crevasse, and a rescue helicopter touched the mountainside, lost its rotors and then rolled down the slope.  Hours of coverage on this and all the other stations, and not one word of explanation about why such things happen this time of year in that place.  The ability, yea the gift, of local tv "journalists" to go on for hours without providing their audience with a single piece of useful information, remains a major quality held by these Ken and Barbie correspondents.  We may be thankful that they didn't get a crew on the ground up there so they could stick a mike in the face of one of the dead people and ask him how he felt.

Those who would like to know something useful about climbing on Cascade peaks this time of year may find that information at http://oregonmag.com/MtHood302.htm.
It has been here for all to read since March, thanks to our editor, the legendary PacNW mountain man, Fred Delkin.
