Squaw Mt. No Longer

On Geographic Political Correctness

Just as American Indians object to the name of the professional football team resident in our nation's capitol, some members of Oregon's tribal population find the term "squaw" offensive.

Interviewed by the Salem Statesman Journal, Sen. Ted Ferrioli, R-John Day, said the term doesn't  have any historical significance.  He went on to express the opinion that this is not a PC, but rather a civil rights issue, and added that the word "squaw" does not have a place in Oregon history.

(God help us if "pioneer" ever becomes un-PC!  Every history book in the schools will lose half their pages.)

Next, no doubt, will come name changes for Bald Peak, which is offensive to the hairless, Mt. St. Helens, which is offensive to non-Catholics, and Salem, which has an anti-feminist taint, related as it is to witch trials.

I, for one, am sick to death of PC, and hope that they change the name of Squaw Mt. to Mt. Mick, after a wonderfully slanderous term for my Irish ancestors.  (LL)
